What Is a Pricing Strategy Consultant

A pricing strategy consultant is a specialist who helps companies design, optimize, and implement pricing and packaging that drives revenue growth, margin expansion, and long-term value. Unlike a general management consultant, the focus is narrow: the commercial decisions that determine how much of the value a company creates it actually gets to keep.

The work typically covers four areas:

  • Price levels, set using value-based logic and willingness-to-pay research
  • Packaging and tiers, aligned with how customers actually buy
  • Pricing models, including subscription, usage-based, tiered, and hybrid structures
  • Pricing governance, so the strategy survives contact with the sales team

Companies engage a pricing strategy consultant when the internal answer is “we are guessing.” The most common triggers:

  • A new product launch with no historical pricing data
  • A packaging or tier redesign where leadership cannot agree
  • Margin erosion that is not yet visible in the P&L
  • A shift in pricing model, such as legacy to SaaS or per-seat to usage-based
  • PE ownership demanding faster value creation

The right consultant brings three things internal teams usually lack: outside perspective calibrated across many engagements, methodological rigor in conjoint analysis and price waterfall diagnostics, and the political cover to push through price moves internal teams cannot move alone.
