What Is Customer Lifetime Value

Customer lifetime value, often shortened to LTV or CLV, is the total profit a company expects to earn from a customer across the entire relationship, not just the first sale. It turns a customer from a one-time transaction into a stream of value over time, which changes how much a business can rationally spend to acquire them and how it should think about pricing and retention.

The calculation combines three inputs: spend per period, the margin on that spend, and how long the customer stays. A customer paying $1,000 a month at 80% gross margin who stays three years is worth roughly $28,800 in gross profit, before discounting for the time value of money. More rigorous versions add expansion, churn probability, and a discount rate, but the logic holds: LTV is margin multiplied by longevity, not revenue multiplied by a guess.

The metric matters because it anchors decisions that look unrelated to pricing but are driven by it. It caps what you can spend to acquire a customer, ranks which segments deserve investment, and exposes the real economics of discounting and retention, where small changes compound across the whole relationship rather than showing up in a single deal.

Pricing shapes lifetime value more than most teams assume, because every input bends to structure. The value metric determines whether spend grows as the customer succeeds, packaging governs expansion, and discount discipline protects margin each period. A base that expands on its own carries higher lifetime value by definition, which is why LTV and net revenue retention move together. Raise realized price without raising churn and LTV climbs across the base at once.

For B2B and PE-backed companies, customer lifetime value is central to the investment case, because it links pricing and retention directly to enterprise value. The fastest way to grow it is rarely acquiring more customers; it is fixing the pricing and packaging so the base is worth more over time.
